Your birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It is the most personal tool in astrology, far more detailed than your Sun sign alone. What Is a Birth Chart?

Outer Planets (Generational)

Aspects — How Planets Talk to Each Other

Aspects are angular relationships between planets that create harmony or tension in your chart:

Conjunction (0°): Two planets merge their energies — intense and amplifying. Can be harmonious or challenging depending on the planets involved.
Sextile (60°): A gentle, cooperative aspect. Represents opportunities that require some effort to activate.
Square (90°): Tension and conflict between two energies. Challenging but drives growth and action. Often the most productive aspect.
Trine (120°): Natural harmony and flow. Talents that come easily, though they can lead to complacency if not consciously used.
Opposition (180°): Two planets face off, creating a push-pull dynamic. Requires balance and awareness of both sides.

The Big Three: Sun, Moon, and Rising

While your full chart contains dozens of placements, the "Big Three" form the core of your astrological identity:

Sun sign: Who you are at your core — your fundamental identity and life purpose
Moon sign: Your emotional inner world — how you feel, what you need for security, your instinctive reactions
Rising sign (Ascendant): The mask you wear — how others perceive you on first meeting, your outward style and approach to life

Someone with a Capricorn Sun, Pisces Moon, and Leo Rising presents as confident and dramatic (Leo Rising), feels deeply and intuitively (Pisces Moon), but is fundamentally driven, ambitious, and disciplined (Capricorn Sun). These three signs together create a much more nuanced portrait than any single sign.

How to Interpret Your Chart

Reading a birth chart is like learning a language — start with the basics and build complexity:

Step 1: Identify your Big Three (Sun, Moon, Rising) and read their sign descriptions
Step 2: Look at which houses your personal planets (Sun through Mars) fall in — these are your most active life areas
Step 3: Note any stelliums (3+ planets in one sign or house) — these indicate areas of concentration and focus
Step 4: Check for major aspects, especially involving the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant ruler
Step 5: Look at the overall balance — are most planets in fire/earth/air/water signs? Cardinal/fixed/mutable?
